UJOSS concerned over arrest of journalists in Warrap State

By Deng Ghai Deng

Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has voiced deep concern over recent treatment of local journalists in Warrap town, following two troubling incidents involving unlawful detentions.

In a statement released on Sunday, UJOSS Coordinator Daniel Mareng Wek detailed how a journalist from Kong Kooc FM was wrongfully detained last month due to a case of mistaken identity.

Police had briefly held the journalist, mistakenly believing him to be a suspect they were pursuing. This incident underscores ongoing issues of miscommunication and wrongful accusations within law enforcement.

Additionally, another journalist Angelo Muorater Duang was arrested on November 1 under vague allegations of social crimes and remains in custody without transparent legal proceedings.

Reports indicate that Duang’s health is deteriorating and he is not receiving adequate medical care while detained.

“We are particularly troubled by the arrested journalist’s deteriorating health and lack of medical attention,” Mareng stated.

“We call on the authorities to provide him with necessary medical treatment and ensure he is brought before the court within the legally required timeframe.”

UJOSS has reached out to several key officials, including the Warrap State Governor and State Police Commissioner, who have all committed to upholding due process and expediting justice for Duang.

The organization continues to advocate for the rights and safety of journalists in the region, stressing the need for accountability and respect for press freedom.
