SPLM urges commission to release election calendar

By Yiep Joseph

Secretary-general (SG) of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Peter Lam Both, has called on the National Election Commission (NEC) to release calendar for the 2026 national election.

The secretary general raised concerns during a one-day workshop for political parties on election regulations on Wednesday.

The workshop brought political parties, other stakeholders, and members of the commission together to discuss the already drafted election regulations.

“If you are going to be doing the presentation like how you are doing it now, they will say you have wasted their time. We wanted to see a guideline from this time to this time; we are going to do this; next time we need this for these particular items,” he said.

“When will you start the voter registration, and when will you complete it?” he added.

He called on the National Election Commission to constantly meet with the political parties in order to create a conducive environment for the election.

Since September, this is the time we are meeting; there is a need to constantly engage in order to make a way forward.

Both urged the National Election Commission to develop a calendar that should guide the political parties in regards to the election.

He added that as time approaches, NEC should prepare a calendar for the election, adding that such a move will help the parties to know the activities of the commission.

The Secretary-General called on the NEC to continue to demand their allocated money for their activities, adding that the SPLM is ready to ensure that elections take place.

However, on his part, the Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok, said that the Commission has planned necessary activities to ensure a peaceful election; however, it continues to demand funds to implement them.

The National Election Commission is ready and has planned activities to ensure that there is a transparent election in the country.

Akok added that the Commission remain committed and united as one body regardless of their party affiliation.

He added that the commission is committed to ensuring that elections are carried out as stated in the extended peace agreement.
