Authorities in Lakes State reported that a 20-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself, leaving behind a four-month-old baby girl.
Police spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac confirmed that on January 9, 2025, the breastfeeding mother took her own life using a rope in Akhorkor village in the Malueth Payam of Rumbek North County.
The reasons behind her act remain unclear, and police are currently investigating to gather more information about the circumstances that led to her tragic decision.
Major Makuac stated that no arrests have been made thus far, as the police continue to investigate potential connections to family members that could lead to further actions.
Daniel Laat Kon, coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in Lakes State, expressed concern about the rising number of isolated incidents in the area.
He noted that this case, involving a woman who left behind a four-month-old baby, highlights a troubling trend.
“You know, looking at these cases of suicide, particularly this year, we are worried as a CEPO and also as partners, if you compare the suicide cases of last year and compare it with happening which is very early and it is telling us that this year, will really be bad,” he said.
Kon pointed out that many suicide cases are linked to gender-based violence (GBV) and the economic crisis in South Sudan.
He urged the community to reflect on their lives and seek help rather than resorting to suicide.
“Don’t take your own life; report cases so you can receive assistance. We are urging everyone to prevent such tragedies because we don’t want people to commit suicide,” he emphasized.
“The government needs to take action, and partners should work together to raise awareness. Now is the right time to establish counseling centers,” he added.
He added that counseling centers could provide essential support for individuals facing difficulties.
