A group of cattle raiders clashed among themselves in Cueibet County of Lakes State, resulting in the deaths of two people.
The dispute erupted after they raided 52 cattle last week.
Lakes State Police Spokesman Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, reported that the conflict arose among notorious criminals from Cueibet County, who clashed over the cattle they had stolen from the Bal-wau area.
“During their clashes, one was killed among them and again they clashed at 5:00 PM and another person was shot and wounded, and later at 9:00 PM at night he also succumbed and died. So, the criminals are still at large with the cattle and the security forces are pursuing them also”, he said.” The herd of cattle were not recovered because these are cattle they clashed over them.”
Makuac explained that the thieves were attempting to divide the cattle when tensions escalated, particularly over a prized bull, which resulted in further violence.
“The presence of a prestigious bull sparked disputes over ownership, ultimately leading to the fatal confrontations,” he added.
The clashes occurred in the Kebi area, a remote location near Agangrial village, making it difficult for law enforcement to intervene.
“The area is far removed, and the cattle owners cannot access it,” Makuac noted. “It is entirely within Cueibet County, and reaching that location poses significant challenges for security forces.”
He emphasized that the group involved is notorious for various crimes, including murder and cattle raiding, and has been a longstanding concern for authorities.
“Reliable sources indicate that there are more than 11 individuals involved in these criminal activities,” he said.
Civil society activist Angelina Adhel expressed her dismay at the violence, emphasizing the need for peace and unity within the community.
“We hoped for a better 2025, where our community could come together. Instead, we are witnessing a regression to past conflicts,” she remarked.
Adhel condemned the rampant killings and cattle raiding that have plagued Lakes State, labeling them as ongoing triggers of conflict.
“The Lakes State government must intervene; what happened poses a threat to peace and stability in our community. Those responsible must be held accountable,” she urged.
She also stressed the importance of community cohesion and respect for the rule of law. “It is crucial for us to unite and abide by the law. We must work collaboratively with the government to ensure stability and protect human dignity,” she concluded.
