By Hou Akot Hou

Authorities in Twic County, Warrap State, are detaining the commissioner’s driver following an accident in which he hit a cleaner while attempting to reverse his vehicle.

Col. Kur Major Aruop reported that the commissioner’s chauffeur accidentally knocked down Awan Deng Majok, a 35-year-old woman, on December 20, 2024. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries this month while receiving treatment in Juba.

Awan was airlifted to Juba for medical care but passed away on January 20, 2025, prompting the arrest of the driver, Chol Deng Chuol, who is 38 years old.

“We are enforcing the law. Nobody is above the law, not even the commissioner’s chauffeur. The legal process will proceed as usual,” Col. Aruop stated.

The driver will be arraigned in court, and the officer urged the family of the deceased to be patient and abide by the legal process.

The officer also emphasized the importance of caution for drivers, especially around pedestrians, and advised them to avoid speeding in heavy vehicles.

Traffic officials cited negligence as a significant factor in road fatalities, while also reminding pedestrians to observe traffic rules when using public roads.
