Don’t seek promotion through politicians-IGP warns

By Yiep Joseph

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Abraham Manyuat, has warned police officers against seeking recommendations for promotions from politicians.

While addressing a police parade, the IGP expressed that promotions in the police forces are earned through individual performance and commitment, as required in the law.

“Some people go to politicians, either in parliament or any politicians with positions, and say, ‘I need to be promoted; it will not work like that; it will not work,” he said.

“You will promote someone based on the performances; just do what is best, and you will be promoted,” he added.

The IGP called on the members of police to remain disciplined and spread unity among the South Sudanese people.

He added that promotions are not a favor from anyone or politicians but a process guided by a law.

IGP warned that those found guilty of lobbying for promotion from politicians or using other necessary means would face the law.

Early this year the Inspector General of Police Gen. Abraham Manyuat said one of his key priorities while in office is transforming the police force into a professional and decent law enforcement.

Gen. Manyuat was appointed by President Salva Kiir in December 2024 in a major security reshuffle to succeed Gen. Atem Marol.

In 2024, the President of the Republic of South Sudan and Commander-in-chief of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, warned the soldiers and other regular forces to refrain from politics.

“We warn SSPDF and other regular forces against involvement in politics, but rather to concentrate on their transformation process into conventional institutions. We will not allow anybody in uniforms to engage in politics because you have a different role to play in the country. To members of the military and other organized forces, from today onward, you must refrain from engaging in dirty politics,” President Kiir said.
