President Salva Kiir has reshuffled Vice President Wani Igga and Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi.
In a decree broadcast over South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), President Kiir appointed Benjamin Bol Mel as the new Vice President for the Economic Cluster, succeeding Dr. James Wani Igga.
Josephine Lagu has been removed from her position as Minister of Agriculture and has been appointed Vice President of the Service Cluster.
In her place, Hussein Abdelbagi has been appointed Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
In a separate decree, Alfred Futuyu Karaba was relieved of his position as Governor of Western Equatoria State, under the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition. A replacement for this position has not yet been announced.
Furthermore, Gen. Akech Tong has been dismissed as the Director General of the National Security Service, Internal Security Bureau, (NSS-ISB) with Lt. General Chiek Mayor appointed as the acting Director General.
In another notable change, Peter Lam Both’s appointment as Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has been revoked, and Dr. James Wani Igga has been designated as the new SPLM Secretary-General.
Tut Gatluak Manime has been relieved of his role as Special Envoy to the Middle East and appointed as South Sudan’s Ambassador to Kuwait.
These changes come as the Second extension of the Transitional Period is set to begin on February 22, 2025.
