President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed Lt. General James Koang Chuol as the new governor of Upper Nile State, a region currently experiencing turmoil.
This decision comes after the dismissal of his predecessor, James Odhok Oyai, although no official explanation has been provided for his removal.

The change in leadership occurs amidst ongoing military operations in the Nasir and surrounding counties, where government forces are actively engaging a militia group known as the ‘white army.’
This group is reported to have ties with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO).
According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that more than 50,000 individuals have been displaced due to the escalating violence.
The continuous clashes have exacerbated the fragile conditions in Upper Nile.
