Poor health services spark increase in Cholera cases in Akobo West

By Peter Kuol Kuch

Authorities in Akobo County have reported that inadequate health services have led to a rise in cholera cases in Walgak this month.

According to the Commissioner of Akobo County, Puok Nyang, the number of cholera cases has surged in recent weeks due to these deficiencies.

“In regard to cholera cases, it’s still a concern, but Walgak is currently the worst affected area. There has been no intervention made to date,” Puok stated Nynang.

He noted that the health facility in Walgak is severely lacking in supplies.

“The situation is worsening because the facility is very poor, and there are no emergency supplies available,” he added.

Reports indicate at least 10 cholera deaths, with around 100 other cases receiving medical attention at the local health facility in Walgak.

Mr. Puok emphasized that poor hygiene and a lack of clean drinking water are contributing significantly to the rise in cholera cases.

“What I have received is that cholera cases have increased; about 10 deaths have been recorded, and 100 are now hospitalized,” he said.

He also mentioned a shortage of fluids necessary to assist cholera patients in the area, appealing to health partners in the state for urgent assistance to address the crisis in Walgak.

In response, Duop Reath, the Director General at the Ministry of Health in Jonglei State, stated that the Ministry is coordinating with the World Health Program to respond to the cholera outbreak in Walgak.

“We sent some fluids last time, but we are now preparing a more comprehensive response in collaboration with health partners in the state,” he explained.

According to the Director General, cholera cases have relatively decreased in most parts of Jonglei State this month compared to the previous two months.
