Authorities in Gogrial East County, Warrap State, are searching for a man accused of strangling a nine-year-old girl on Wednesday in Luony-Aker Payam, Gogrial East County. The suspect allegedly attempted to rape her before fleeing the scene.
Police investigator Mr. Thiik Agoth Giir, in Luony-Aker Payam, disclosed to this publication on Friday during a phone interview that the suspect attempted to rape the girl but fled when she screamed. The girl was immediately taken to the hospital.
He stated that residents of Luony-Aker Payam were alerted to the incident, and the report was promptly filed at the police station, enabling the search for the suspect.
Mr. Agoth identified the suspect as Majut Akot Kuot, who is reportedly related to the girl. He emphasized that they need to apprehend him so he can face legal consequences.
“We are actively searching for the suspect, especially given his familial connection to the victim. The actions of this 24-year-old man against a nine-year-old child have deeply disturbed the community. According to the law, this crime can carry a sentence of up to 10 years,” he stated.
He further added, “We are determined to find this young man, as the girl’s father is understandably outraged by his actions.”
Medical personnel at the Luony-Aker health facility described the survivor’s condition as improving. She is currently receiving treatment at the facility.
Mr. Bol Reech Gum, the health officer at the center, reported that her condition upon arrival was alarming, as she was bleeding. However, after receiving medication to stop the bleeding, her condition has stabilized.
Authorities indicate that the initial report suggests the suspect found the survivor alone at home and attempted to assault her. This act has incensed local residents, and the search for the suspect is ongoing to ensure he is brought to justice.
Rape is a punishable offense in South Sudan, and citizens are strongly urged to refrain from such unacceptable behavior towards the opposite sex.
