Northern Bahr El Gazal state government has transported over 1000 returnees who settled in Abyei, after fleeing fighting that erupted in Sudan.
Majority among the huge influx of the returnees, hail from Aweil.
Spokesperson Aweil Association in Abyei, Tong Kuot Tong said Northern bahr El Gazal state sent a delegation to Amiet in Abyei, to facilitate repatriation of the returnees who were camped under trees.
Northern Bahar El Gazal state minister of physical infrastructure, Mr. Dominic Kang, led the delegation in company of Relief Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) chairperson.
Kuot said the state government dispatched 14 vehicles to transport the returnees back to their respective homes in the state.
“We are delighted to announce that our people have been transported back home. Over 1000 returnees have been taken. These people come from different areas in our state. And the 14 vehicles have taken them,” he noted.
According to Kuot, development partners didn’t do much this time round, but “only the state delivered the transportation”.
He stressed the need for people to support the people back as they will be re-integrated into their homes.
Since fighting erupted in Sudan, Northern Bahr El Gazal has been grappling with influx of returnees and refugees.
The government, with support of partners on ground, is shouldering a huge responsibility of catering for the needs of the returnees, addressing their concerns for livelihoods, health, education, shelter among others.
