President Salva Kiir Mayardit has commended the people of Lakes State and their governor for maintaining peace and stability.
According to a statement released from the President’s office, Lakes State governor, Riny Tueny Mabor had early this week, briefed the president on the state of affairs within the region.
Governor Tueny informed President Kiir that the overall security and social situation in Lakes State remains calm, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to ensuring continued peace and stability.
President Kiir, in response, praised the governor and the citizens of Lakes State for their dedication to peace over the past four years, urging them to build upon this spirit of cooperation and harmony.
This commendation underscores the significant progress made in Lakes State, a region that faced considerable challenges before Governor Tueny’s appointment.
Good governance
Governor Riny Tueny Mabor was appointed in June 2021 through a Republican Decree, at a time when Lakes State was plagued by communal conflict and bloodshed.
Since assuming office, he has been credited with successfully restoring order and transforming the state into one of the most peaceful regions in the country.
His efforts have been widely recognized. In January 2023, Governor Tueny, along with Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore, received awards from LEADS Africa and the South Sudan General Students Union for their outstanding contributions to improving security and governance.
Governor Tueny also received the “Best Governor of the Year 2022” award from the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) for his success in combating inter-communal violence and overseeing the enactment of a law prohibiting forced and child marriage.
During the 2023 award ceremony, Governor Tueny cited the dividends of the relative calm in Lakes State such as increased access to education, improved business conditions, and enhanced agricultural productivity.
The President’s commendation highlights the government’s recognition of the progress achieved in Lakes State and reinforces the importance of maintaining peace and stability across South Sudan.
