Abyei convicts appeal for financial support

By Hou Akot Hou

At least four individuals convicted of charges including murder and theft have appealed for financial assistance to help free some of the five convicts whose verdicts have been passed.

Mr. Tong Kuot Tong, spokesperson for the Aweil Community in Abyei, revealed this information to on Monday via phone call. He stated that one of the convicts is a man from Aweil East County, specifically from Warawar Town, who has been accused of murdering someone in Abyei.

Kuot mentioned that the other four convicts are facing minor charges, including individuals who owe money, with debts amounting to 50,000 SSP.

He appealed for support for these individuals, noting that their debts range from 50,000 to 100,000 SSP, which he believes can be settled with the help of well-wishers.

“We met with local officials in Abyei, including Molana Mathiang Kuach and MP Matem Achen, who were briefed about the situation. We discussed the issue of the convicts who need support,” said Kuot.

“We believe it is imperative to help these convicts, as their charges are minor, particularly those convicted for debts they owe. If we had active associations in the region and beyond, they could support these brothers in prison in Abyei,” Tong emphasized.

According to Tong, the Aweil community in Abyei has been focusing on supporting local residents, including returnees, and is currently less able to assist other victims of cases, such as the four convicts.

Kuot acknowledged the difficult conditions everyone is facing but stated that community associations in Abyei are seeking ways to help free the convicts currently incarcerated there.
