Suspected armed militant released from Custody in Kajo-Keji

By Kei Emmanuel Duku

Kajo-Keji County Commissioner Wani Jackson Mule revealed that a suspected armed militant, previously held in custody, has been released following extensive investigations.

This release is part of a broader effort by his administration to free civilians detained by various security organs in the county since he took office.

Commissioner Mule stated that the nine individuals, including the recently released militant, were initially arrested on suspicion of links to armed groups operating within the county while others were apprehended during combat.

Speaking to a group of Kajo-Keji youths in Juba, Commissioner Jackson remarked, “the individuals in question were apprehended during security operations but have now been released after thorough investigations by the relevant authorities.”

He emphasized that the decision was made after consultations with Brigadier General Henry Buri, the Area Commander, traditional chiefs of Kajo-Keji County, and the parents or relatives of the suspects.

The Commissioner further noted that before their release, all suspects underwent thorough screening.

Those found to have committed criminal offenses such as rape, robbery, or other crimes were transferred to the county police for further investigation and due process of the law.

Kajo-Keji County, located in Central Equatorial State, has experienced recurrent insecurity in recent years.

This includes clashes between government forces and armed groups, as well as incidents of illegal activities and the displacement of communities resulting from illegal loggers and armed herding.

Commissioner Jackson, who was sworn into office last month, has made restoring peace and strengthening security a top priority for his administration.

“I have seen citizens from the camps massively returning home, trade is on-going, and together with organizations, we are already partnering in renovating health centres, schools, and water points,” Jackson added. “So, there has been tremendous progress in restoring security in the county recently even before I arrived.”

This release comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize Kajo-Keji, which borders Uganda and has seen many residents flee due to insecurity.

Kajo-Keji County was a focal point for military confrontations involving government and opposition forces in the past.

Commissioner Mule assured residents that his administration is working closely with security agencies and community leaders to address these challenges and promote lasting peace.
