A road ambush in Tonj South County on Wednesday resulted in the death of one traveler and left another injured.

The victims were traveling in a Land Cruiser from Juba when they were attacked near the Ametchok area.

Mamer Bath, the Minister for Information in Warrap State, confirmed the incident to No.1 Citizen.

“I spoke with the commissioner of Tonj, and he confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday,” he said, adding that security forces have been dispatched to the area.

When asked about potential arrests, Minister Mamer stated, “Unfortunately, no arrests have been made because the area is heavily forested. When the attackers learned of the forces’ intervention, they fled into the bush.”

He assured the public that soldiers would be stationed in Ametchok for some time to ensure the safety of travellers.

The Minister of Information reassured the public of ongoing efforts to maintain peace.

The latest ambush in Tonj South reflects a troubling pattern of insecurity that transcends mere criminality, often indicating deeper societal issues and a challenging post-conflict environment.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the volatile security situation that has long plagued parts of South Sudan, a nation struggling with the aftermath of decades of civil war and communal violence.
