Jonglei governor vows to revolutionize agricultural sector

In a move to reshape economic landscape of Jonglei state, in partnership with Korean experts, governor Riek Gai Kok has pledged to transform agricultural sector.

Governor Riek’s declaration comes as South Sudan grapples with persistent food insecurity, a challenge he believes Jonglei’s vast agricultural potential could address.

During a meeting with the Korean delegation, Governor Kok expressed optimism about the collaboration.

He emphasized that harnessing Jonglei’s fertile lands and favorable climate is no longer an option but a critical imperative.

“Agriculture is no longer a mere talking point in Jonglei; it’s a critical endeavor,” Riek declared with conviction.

“Our future hinges on our agricultural success, and we’re approaching it with renewed vigour this year,” he stressed.

Jonglei State, known for its conducive climate for farming, is already making strides in enhancing production of key commodities where it holds a comparative advantage; some of these food crops include Irish potatoes, rice, maize, sorghum, pumpkins, and onions.

The collaboration between Jonglei state government and the Korean experts is anticipated to amplify the efforts to substantial economic growth, improved local livelihoods.

Governor Riek underscored his administration’s unwavering commitment to the agricultural revolution.

He argued that the state’s agricultural vision extends beyond meeting local food needs; but aims for Jonglei to emerge as a major global player in food exports.

“Jonglei State has weather patterns and topography blessed with abundant natural resources,” he noted, highlighting the inherent advantages that position the state for agricultural prominence.

The partnership with Korean experts is expected to bring advanced agricultural techniques, technological innovations, and investment, accelerating Jonglei’s quest towards becoming a self-sufficient food basket within the country.

Governor Riek noted that the initiative comes at pivotal moment for Jonglei State, signaling a determined shift towards sustainable development and economic prosperity rooted in the state’s agricultural heritage.
