Activists condemn heinous gang-rape case in Gumbo-Sherikat

Civil Society and Human Right advocates have condemned the heinous gang-rape case in Gumbo-Sherikat.

On Thursday, disturbing footage appeared showing a girl being forced into sexual acts by a group of youths who recorded the incident in the Sherikat neighborhood.

Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka, the national police spokesperson, confirmed to the media that at least six people have been arrested as investigations continue.

In response to the incident, members of the Civil Society condemned the act and called on the government to bring the culprits to book.

The activists expressed that the act amounted to a human rights violation punishable by law.

In a statement to the Media, Ter Manyang, Executive Director of the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) called for immediate arrest of the culprits.

“The CPA calls on law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to immediately investigate this case and ensure that all perpetrators are arrested and held accountable in accordance with the law,” Manyang said

“According to her family, the victim was attacked by a group identified as the “Niggas” gang while she was returning from the market,” he added

One Citizen Network for Democracy (OCND), human right advocacy group also condemned the act of gender-based violence (GBV) and called for justice.

Speaking to the media, Mboringba Elizabeth, Assistant Program Manager of OCND, expressed disappointed and called for immediate intervention from the government.

“As the OCND organization, we highly condemn such acts and called on the government to hold the culprits accountable,” Elizabeth said.

The community liaison officer for the OCND organization, Silvia Aya Sarafino, echoed the need for government to double efforts in protection of girls and Children from sexual assault.

“We will make this an alarm to the community leaders, to the family members, not forgetting the government so that these boys should be brought to book of law for what they have done,” said.

She reiterated that the human right advocates continuous fight in ending sexual and other forms of violent across the country.
