Bor Municipality receives road equipment

By Peter Kuol Kuch

Bor Municipal Council has received a donation of five excavators and two emergency water pump machines from International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The equipment is intended to improve the town’s sanitation and drainage system, which has been severely impacted by recent floods.

These machines are part of IOM’s flood response plan and will be deployed by municipal authorities to clear stagnant water currently blocking roads and drainage systems throughout Bor town.

Recent flooding in Bor has caused widespread damage, destroying road networks and residential areas due to a critical lack of adequate water channels.

In an interview with this publication, Bor Municipality Mayor, Jacob Achiek Machar, expressed optimism that the new equipment will be instrumental in transforming the town’s infrastructure.

“Each excavator will be assigned to one of our five blocks with a quota to open water pathways,” Achiek explained. “We assure residents the water must flow out of town when this work is complete.” Achiek said.

The mayor emphasized that this flood response initiative is part of the municipality’s broader strategy to collaborate with partners to ensure streets, culverts, and drainage channels remain free of stagnant water.

“We got more than 100 culverts now to be installed at different sites to ease the flow of flood water in the town. This is what we can do and it must work,” Achiek added.

Mayor Achiek also stressed the health benefits of creating clear water channels, noting that it will reduce breeding grounds for insects, thereby decreasing the risk of disease outbreaks within the town.

Areas such as Lekyak, Nigel, and Achiengdier are among the suburbs in Bor town that have experienced severe flooding recently.

Between June and July 2025, Bor has endured heavy rainfall, leading to widespread stagnant water, damaged residential buildings, and disrupted road networks.
