Health officials in Yei River County of Central Equatoria State have urged the residents to follow cholera preventative measures.

Some of the basic measures include drinking and using safe water, proper hand washing often with soap and safe water, proper use of toilets, proper waste disposal, eating warming food, among others.

The health officials revealed that till now the county has not registered cases of cholera; however, there is a need for residents to respect the preventative measures.

Cons Guya, the acting county health director, revealed that the county has not registered any cases of cholera in its recent outbreak.

“We have not registered any cases of cholera since the beginning of this year, only that in January 2025 there were three suspects of cholera, but when we tested the samples, they were not positive,” he said.

“We are ensuring that all people should wash their hands with soap before eating anything and drinking clean water to avoid germs,” the health official appealed.

Guya called on families to warm their food before eating as a measure of preventing cholera.

“I also appeal to all the families living in Yei to avoid cold food because it may contain some germs,” he said.

In a related development, officials from SUHA, UNICEF, and the Social Sector Transformation Project (SSTP) held a meeting with Yei River County commissioner, on Wednesday to introduce a new one-year health initiative.

Abraham Sekuma, Health Project Officer for SUHA, noted the new project is set to run from July 2025 to July, next year.

Sekuma highlighted UNICEF’s role in the health sector, particularly through the provision of malaria and pneumonia vaccines for children under five.

He also noted that UNICEF currently supports over 19 health facilities across Central Equatoria State, including seven within Yei River County.
