Jonglei State inter-clan violence death toll rises to seven

By Deng Ghai Deng

Authorities in Jonglei State have confirmed that the death toll from the recent inter-clan conflict in Nyirol County has risen to seven.

The clashes erupted last week between the Cie-Pual and Cie-Khertut sections of Cie-Dumin in Lankien, following a revenge killing that occurred on August 29, 2024, when a member of Cie-Dumin killed an individual from Cie-Pual.

Jonglei State Minister of Information, Nyamar Lony Thichot Ngundeng, reported that four deaths occurred on the first day of the conflict, with an additional three fatalities recorded on October 31.

She urged the communities in Nyirol to maintain calm while the government works to address the situation.
“The total number of deceased is seven. The message from the government is clear: we urge communities to prioritize peace and refrain from senseless revenge killings,” Nyamar stated.

In response to the violence, Jonglei State Governor Majoub Biel Turuk has established a committee composed of government officials and community leaders to identify the underlying causes of the conflict and facilitate a peaceful resolution.

The Jonglei State Government has condemned the ongoing cycle of revenge killings and is calling on all communities to embrace peace.
