Police in Bor, Jonglei State, confirmed on Wednesday that one person was killed following an incident related to a girl’s elopement.

According to police officials, the fatality occurred during a fight involving youth from Malual in Kolnyang and Angakuei in Baidit payams. The violence broke out over the elopement of a young woman.

1st Lt. James Akech, spokesperson for the police in Jonglei State, stated that the police have contained the situation, and the deceased’s body has been taken under police care pending burial.

“The incident occurred between Malual and Angakuei when a young woman was eloped last night by a young man from Angakuei. People did not agree with this, which led to the fight,” said Lt. Akech.

He mentioned that the police have begun investigating the incident, and the culprits have not yet been apprehended.

“As the police, we intervened and went to calm the situation. The deceased has been taken to the hospital before burial,” Akech added.

The police condemned the violence and urged local communities to discuss social issues amicably, without resorting to violence.

This follows a similar incident last week, which resulted in another death caused by the deceased’s brothers.
