Western Equatoria launches youth, women peace initiative

By Gaaniko Jackson

Western Equatoria State and development partners have launched peace initiative aimed at empowering youth and women in conflict-affected regions.

The launch ceremony, held in Yambio, introduced a two-state project set to be implemented in Western Equatoria and Unity State (Bentiu), focusing on areas recovering from prolonged violence, including Tambura.

Speaking to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper, Mr. Albert Zingorani, Deputy Director of the Relief and Development Agency Africa (RDAA), highlighted the transformative nature of the project.

“Our mission is to support peacebuilding by actively involving women and youth—those at the heart of community resilience and transformation,” he said. “We are committed to seeing lives changed for the better across South Sudan.”

LM International’s Project Coordinator, Mr. Morris Kumbo, echoed the importance of strong collaboration with local stakeholders to drive lasting impact.

Yoana Robert Mark, Acting Minister of Peacebuilding in Western Equatoria State, praised the initiative, urging all partners to work in unity.

“This project will significantly impact youth and women. We encourage the formation of an inclusive monitoring and evaluation committee to ensure transparency and sustainability,” he said during the event.

Also speaking to Number one Citizens, Tandu Phillip Wilson, Deputy Chairperson of the Youth Peace Forum in Yambio, called on implementing agencies to focus on youth who have not yet participated in any civic or peace-related programs.

“Inclusivity is key—especially for young people with disabilities. We must de-politicize youth engagement if we want genuine peace,” he emphasized.
