South Sudan is in a serious hunger crisis that may cost lives, though tendrils of inflation have already done, the worst is expected as local currency continues to depreciate against the United States dollar.
The government needs to settle this situation. What prevails now, gives a clear picture of a state failing to control its economy, leaving questions behind like “Does this country have growth plans or this is the end point?”
In this tense of looming hunger in the country, it is going to be difficult to shift from humanitarian to developmental activities such as developing the Agriculture Sector. Also, is hard to lessen the humanitarian assistance since independence on 9 July 2011, the country has not looked at farming as economic back born, since donations take the lead here.
But the truth is, South Sudanese citizens should wake up and concentrate on Agriculture rather than being dependent on agencies. Sometimes hard work supports economic growth.
South Sudan has enough land for all kinds of developmental activities such as industrialization and even for large scale farming to take place in the villages. There is no need to depend on others, but the need to work hard to reduce the looming hunger.
The country is capable of producing enough food. Take areas like Yambio in Western Equatoria state, Yei and Kajo-Keji in Central Equatoria state, as well as many other states. We could not have experienced hard economic situation.
Security should be provided to farmers to access their gardens, better roads for the farmers to be able to travels to markets to sell their produce both within, regionally internationally.
If there is enough production, this would reduce the cost of living in the country and the demand will be less for other commodities, so comes the need for external marketing.
South Sudanese citizens should not depend on politicians who are confusing the country with pretext of stability yet not. Citizens should practice agriculture and not to over depend on humanitarian agencies.
Partners should provide agricultural tools but not continue spoon-feeding the country. Politicians always warn on the issue of dependency, yet the sole cause of suffering of this country is political.
Politicians do not care about the lives of citizens in terms of service delivery.
Civilians are often the obvious targets of the current insecurity in the country; sometimes innocent people are being killed just because of political struggle for power. These self-centeredness blindfolds the actor to acknowledge the economic hardship that torments the country.
I appeal to the government of South Sudan to provide security in all areas for safety of farmers to engage in agricultural activities.
God Protect South Sudan
