Lunatic stabs two people

A mentally disturbed man has stabbed and injured two people in Anyuom-janng village in Gomjuer West Payam of Aweil West County, Northern Bahr El Gazal State.

Eyewitnesses told this outlet on Monday that the accused man, identified as Kenyang Lual, stabbed a 3-year-old child in the chest and arm while the mother was away.

The second survivor is a neighbor called Amiir Kuol Piol, who rushed to the house where the baby was crying, and she was eventually attacked by the madman, who also stabbed her in the head.

The baby, called Garang Kur, and the second victim, Amiir Kuol Piol, are both being treated at the Nyamlel Hospital.

Deputy Director of Nyamlel Hospital, Lual Khamis Lual, confirmed they received the two patients from the incident that took the area’s residents by surprise.

“Over the weekend, two people were brought from Anyuom-jak. According to the medical examination that we have carried out, the boy is stabbed in the chest, and the woman is also suffering from a wound as she was stabbed by a knife in the head,” he said.

“The two victims are having serious knife wounds, as they were indeed bleeding,” he continued.

Khamis, however, stated that the patients are responding well to treatment in the hospital.

The Criminal Investigation Officer (CID) in the area, Lt. Colonel Philip Agany, said that the suspect is in police custody.

“The man who is purported to be a mentally ill person is being detained as we fear that he will carry on attacking people even worse. So that is why we are detaining him,” said Agany.

The police detective, however, blames the suspect’s relatives for allowing the man, whom they know is mentally disturbed, to walk and roam around without any caution.

He stressed that the suspect might end up killing some residents in the neighborhood due to his aggressiveness.

South Sudan’s hospitals and health facilities are ill-equipped with specialized units that can handle mental illness cases.
