By Bosco Bush

Western Equatoria State (WES) governor, Alfred Futuyo Karaba calls for free political space to enable opposition parties to engage freely with citizens.

His call came when a delegation from the National Legislative Assembly, Peace and Reconciliation Committee on Monday arrived in Yambio town to collect views of the citizens regarding the two bills – Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing, and Compensation Repatriation.

In a statement obtained, Futuyo stated that it would be hard for parties to engage with the citizens in the absence of free political space.

“There’s a need for political space because if people and other political parties are not allowed to engage with the citizens it will be very hard for reconciliation to take place. Because some of these political parties will feel marginalized,” he stated.

The delegation led by Rebecca Aluel Mayor, deputy chairperson for the Commission of Peace and Reconciliation will also proceed to engage with people in Tambura town.

According to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing should be established to address the legacy of conflicts and promote peace, national reconciliation, and healing.

While the Compensation and Reparation Authority provides material and financial support to citizens affected by conflict and helps them rebuild their livelihoods.
