South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) soldier has been arrested for killing his wife in Sherikat military barracks in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State.
According to Sector Commander Brigadier General Marino Oholong, the soldier, identified as German Tito, was under the influence of alcohol when he allegedly assaulted his two wives using a stick.
The incident occurred on Wednesday. The wife, identified as Angua, died at around midnight.
Brig. Gen. Oholong stated that the soldier had initially been separated from his wives, but later returned and brutally attacked them.
“The soldier fought with his wife at 8 PM, but they were separated, and he went away. Later, he came back and beat the wife, and she went and collapsed at a neighbor’s home, where she died,” Oholong explained.
The suspected soldier has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Division 7 main barracks.
Mustafa Albino Zacharia, the mayor of Torit Municipal Council, described the incident as a “serious criminal case” and called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice.
Davidika Ikai, the chairperson of the Eastern Equatoria State Women’s Association, condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation, stating that “justice is needed for the deceased, and the perpetrator should not be left unpunished.”
This tragic incident comes just a week after another SSPDF soldier was arrested for shooting and killing a 15-year-old student in Ikwoto County, also in Eastern Equatoria State.
