A violent cattle raid in Jonglei State’s Ayod County has resulted in one fatality and the theft of over 4,000 heads of cattle.
The attack, allegedly carried out by thieves from the neighbouring Uror County last week, has raised tensions and calls for intervention.
Mary Nyualang, a Member of Parliament representing Ayod County in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), raised the alarm over the incident during a parliamentary session on Tuesday.
She described the raid as brutal and devastating, noting that among the stolen cattle was a group of 41 heads, and a woman—mother to a 3-month-old baby—was killed in the attack.
Nyualang detailed that the raiders, who fled back to Uror County after the assault, left a trail of destruction.
The local commissioner and his team managed to recover some of the stolen cattle, but the majority remains missing.
“The situation is extremely tense,” Nyualang told Parliament. “We urge the authorities in Uror County to take responsibility and prevent further acts of violence and revenge.”
Efforts to reach officials in Uror County for comment on the raid and the ongoing security situation were not immediately successful.
