As floods continue to submerge most areas in Jonglei State, residents of Twic East County are appealing to the newly appointed commissioner to initiate projects that can help alleviate the situation.
During the welcoming ceremony of the commissioner, Juach Arok, at the county headquarters, the people of Panygor emphasized the need for effective initiatives to control the flood.
Chief Bol Manyok, speaking at the event over the weekend, highlighted that despite several proposed solutions, no serious measures have been implemented to mitigate the impact of the floods in Jonglei State.
The Chief urged the newly appointed commissioner to devise and implement initiatives, stating that the community is ready to support such efforts.
He also mentioned that due to the floods, many areas have been abandoned, leaving the population displaced.
With the hope to ensure that residents in the area embark on agriculture, Chief Bol asked the commissioner to provide flood-resistant seeds, as most farmlands are submerged, posing challenges to the farmers.
He assured that with effective solutions to the ongoing flood, the local people would be able to return to their homes and resume their lives.
The Chief further lamented that while the residents of Twic East and farmers struggle with the flood, politicians continue to make promises that are not followed through, prolonging the impact of the disaster.
“Every commissioner and those politicians are making promises everywhere that we shall do this and this to end the flood however our people continue to suffer with the flood, we need solutions to end the suffering of our people not promises,” he said.
He appealed to well-wishers to continue with the usual support meant for those being affected by the flood.
The Chief expressed that due to the continuous flood in the country, survival continues to be hard, with most families living without farmland while they were farmers before.
He added that the population that moves to swamp areas continue to face floods as water levels increase all the time and wash away their shelters.
In his part, the commissioner of Twic East County Juach Arok noted the call from the masses and promised that his Administration would work hard to ensure dykes are constructed and other measures to control flood and its impact are put in place.
He appealed to the residents to remain united and focus on areas of agriculture to fight food insecurity in the area.
Jauch acknowledged the suffering of the people due to the flood, adding that his leadership would join hands with the state government and the partners to ensure that necessary help is given to the people.
