Authorities in Hiyala Payam, Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State, have reported heightened tensions following the shooting of a 22-year-old man identified as Obila Ateib.
Despite the presence of security forces, the situation in the area remains unstable.
Torit County Commissioner Christopher Andrew said security personnel are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred during a late-night “Lugara” dance.
The young man was shot in the early hours of Monday morning while socializing with peers in Hiyala Center.
Commissioner Andrew cautioned the youth against becoming pawns in conflicts incited by politicians who may undermine peace in the county.
“This morning, (Monday) we received information about the incident and directed that the wounded be taken to the hospital,” he said stating that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement that arose during a cultural dance.
The commissioner stated that security forces have been instructed to locate and apprehend the suspect involved in the shooting.
“We should not listen to those who mislead us. Some individuals exploit the youth for their own interests, using them as tools for conflict,” he added.
According to local officials, the disagreement that led to the shooting was minor but escalated quickly, resulting in Obila being shot and later succumbing to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The incident has provoked anger among the deceased’s family, who have taken up arms in search of revenge. Security agents intervened to prevent further violence.
The shooting follows another incident last week, where a 33-year-old man was killed in Loronyo amid rising tensions between youth groups from Isaru and Hiyala.
Authorities attribute this violence to political instigation.
Paramount Chief Galileo Ohide expressed concern over the situation, noting that both youth and security forces are actively searching for the suspect, who remains at large.
