Security situation along the Tsertenya border in Ikwoto County, between South Sudan and Uganda remains tense following a cattle raid by suspected Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF) soldiers.
The incident occurred last week when UPDF forces allegedly crossed into South Sudan territory and seized an unspecified number of cattle, including oxen.
In addition to the livestock, a local cattle herder’s AK-47 rifle was reportedly taken.
While no casualties were reported, the incursion has sparked fear and frustration among local communities.
“All the community are frustrated,” said Timon Loboi, the Ikwoto County Commissioner.
“You can see them in gloomy faces, everyone is annoyed, from the young ones to the elder ones, so what do you think will happen next, am calling on the state support to the area to communicate with our neighbours, the Ugandans to help resolve this issue peacefully,” he added.
Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Information and Communication, Elia John Ahaji, confirmed the incident and stated that the government is engaging with Ugandan authorities to resolve the issue and secure the return of the stolen cattle.
He expressed concern that the ongoing tensions could escalate if not addressed promptly.
“Yes, we have got the information of what happened in Tsertenya of Ikwoto County the government is in communication with the neighboring district of Uganda but all will be resolved soon,” said Elia.
During a border meeting on the 13th of this month, both sides agreed to de-escalate tensions and maintain peaceful relations. However, the incident has undermined the efforts.
