SPLM condemns suspension of Jonglei minister

By William Madouk

Acting Secretary of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Jonglei state, David Anyang Nyuon condemned Governor Mahjoub Biel Turuk for suspending the Minister of Land and Housing.

Mr. Nyuon in a statement seen by this outlet, claimed that the party was sidelined in what he terms an ‘unprocedural’ suspension.

“We the SPLM state secretariate do hereby condemn in the strongest term possible the unprocedural suspension of the minister of Land, Housing and Public Utilities, Hon. Isaac Mamer Ruk,” he said.

“We the SPLM condemn the act of unilateral decision which lack leadership consultation between the two principles H.E governor and H.E Deputy Governor of Jonglei state,” he added.

The SPLM called on the governor to revoke the suspension order and reinstate back Mr. Ruk.

This came after the governor of Jonglei State, Mahjoub stripped Isaac Mamer Ruk of his title and placed him under house arrest.

Governor Mahjoub accused the letter of instigating recent anti-Sudan protests that led to the looting of Sudanese-owned businesses in the state capital, Bor.

Last week, protests erupted in Bor following the killing of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan. Angry youth took to the streets, resulting in the looting of Sudanese-owned shops.

In a document dated January 22, the Governor ordered Ruk’s house arrest until further notice.

“Isaac Mamer Ruk is to remain at his home until further notice,” the document stated. “His Excellency Mahjoub Biel Turuk, the Governor of the State and Chairperson of the Security Committee, shall form an investigation committee to investigate the Minister’s involvement in many Security issues in the state, including recent developments such as the looting of the Marol Market.”

However, the suspended minister Mr. Ruk has denied the accusations, calling them baseless.
Ruk further alleged that the Governor is dividing the state cabinet based on political affiliations.
