These are difficult times for citizens who desperately need peace.
The insecurity in Nasir County has instilled fear throughout the country, as no one knows where violence might erupt next. Civilians are dying daily in Nasir County. Where is the government? Why are citizens not protected from these atrocities? This terrifying and deadly reality is unacceptable.
The army’s targeting and killing of civilians must stop. There is no justification for such actions. Who are they fighting? Are they targeting the White Army or innocent civilians? How does killing civilians resolve any issues?
Armed men should only engage those bearing arms in Nasir County, not bombard health centers where women and children seek medical care. For nearly a month, the security situation in Nasir County has deteriorated, with indiscriminate killings of civilians through airstrikes and widespread looting. These actions are a gross violation of human rights and defy human understanding.
In the recent incident on March 17, 2025, in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, numerous lives were taken in cold blood, according to government reports. This horrific incident claimed innocent lives, indicating that armed individuals are sponsoring this violence across the country or in certain regions. Young people are being exploited in these senseless wars, deprived of the opportunity for education.
On Sunday night, an airstrike in Nasir town resulted in the deaths of 20 civilians, including women and children. Photographs of the victims circulated widely on social media. These barbaric acts are a blatant violation of human rights and deserve widespread condemnation.
In light of these developments, One Citizen Network for Democracy urges local authorities and the national government to initiate dialogue and advocate for lasting peace in South Sudan, particularly in Upper Nile.
The principal parties should convene an emergency meeting to address the escalating conflicts in Nasir County, Upper Nile State. Failure to do so risks South Sudan descending into a state of emergency, which would be disastrous.
I appeal to local authorities, the national government, church leaders, the international community, and IGAD to uphold the fundamental principles of humanity and respect for human life in all circumstances.
I implore the international community to take concrete measures to protect civilians and their property in conflict zones.
God protect South Sudan.
