Security forces in Western Equatoria State have restored calm in Yambio after arresting 15 suspected criminals were arrested.

The suspects who were paraded in public on Monday, after arrest during security operation, are accused of looting, arson and destruction of property.

According to police reports, nine suspects were arrested on Saturday, while six others were apprehended on Sunday.

Police said the suspects are currently in custody at Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yambio as investigations continue.

Speaking during the public parade, Acting Police Commissioner, Samuel Tet confirmed that the arrests were part of a broader effort to curb criminal activities in the state capital.

“Our forces worked tirelessly to track down and arrest these individuals. We urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities,” Tet stated.

He further revealed that some suspects were pursued into Nzara County, where additional arrests were made.
“A few were caught while riding motorbikes along the roads. Our officers acted swiftly to apprehend them,” he added.

Western Equatoria state Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Severino Morris condemned the involvement of youth in criminal activities.

“These are not outsiders. They are our own youth from Western Equatoria. It is unfortunate that instead of engaging in meaningful work, they choose crime,” he lamented.

Yambio County Commissioner, Mbiko Barakati described the incidents as destructive and called for strict legal action.

“This kind of lawlessness must end. The government must ensure they are prosecuted and face the full force of the law,” he emphasized.

He also urged the judiciary to impose severe penalties, including the death sentence for those responsible for serious offences.

Some of the arrested individuals were found in possession of multiple identification documents, raising suspicions about their affiliations.

“These suspects claim to belong to different security forces, including SSPDF, CID, and National Security. Some carry multiple ID cards, which is highly suspicious,” Commissioner Barakati noted.

Acting governor of Western Equatoria state, Daniel Badagbu, instructed security forces to intensify investigations and identify any accomplices linked to the arrested suspects.

“These criminals have terrorized our people, but now, peace has returned. Residents should feel safe to move freely,” he assured me.

Badagbu also urged the judiciary to expedite the legal process.

“The judges must act swiftly and deliver verdicts within 48 hours. If Yambio Prison cannot accommodate them, I will have them transferred to Juba,” he warned.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security in Yambio and surrounding areas. Security operations will continue to prevent further criminal activities and ensure the safety of residents.
