These are tough times for the citizens, who are crying for peace.
The insecurity in the country has terrified every citizen because no one knows what might happen anywhere within South Sudan. Civilians are dying everywhere across the country. Government, where are you? Why are citizens not protected from such atrocities? Scaring citizens and killing them can be accounted for. Why use gunships on civilians?
An army that targets civilians needs to be held accountable. There is no reason to use gunships near civilians instead of fighting enemies. Are the targets the ‘white army’ or the civilians? And by killing civilians, how is this helping you?
Armed men should only fight those holding guns across the country, not bombarding health centres where women and children are receiving medication. It has been almost a month since the security situation worsened across South Sudan, with the killing of civilians using airstrikes and the looting of properties on the spot. This reflects a violation of human rights and goes beyond human understanding. It marks a painful history for all South Sudanese. The question is: where will civilians go for treatment and schooling, especially when education in this country is still at a snail’s pace?
Since the incident happened in Nasir County of Upper Nile State on 17th of March 2025, a lot of lives were also lost following bombardment in Panyume, Morobo, and Yaribe, last month. This horrific incident also claimed innocent lives. It indicates that politicians are responsible for this war across the country or in some parts of the country, involving young people who are being used for senseless wars at the expense of leaders instead of going to school.
On Saturday morning, an airstrike bombed Old Fangak, killing seven people and injuring 20 more. These resulted in the deaths of civilians, including women and children. Photographs of victims were widely circulated on social media; such barbaric acts are a violation of human rights and must be widely condemned.
In light of these developments, One Citizen Network for Democracy urged the local authorities and national government to launch dialogue and advocate for lasting peace in South Sudan. The principal parties should call for an emergency meeting to resolve the increasing conflicts across the country. Otherwise, South Sudan will soon be in a state of emergency, which is detrimental.
I appeal to local authorities, the National Government, Church leaders, and the international community, including IGAD, to uphold the fundamental principles of humanity and to show respect for human life in all circumstances.
I implore the international community to take measures, advocate for the protection of civilians and their property in conflict zones, and condemn this act in the strongest terms.
God protect South Sudan.
