A delegation from the National Ministry of Energy, accompanied by World Bank officials, met with Yei River County Commissioner, Emmanuel Taban Seme on Thursday to discuss the revitalization and expansion of Yei Electric Cooperation (YECO).

The focus of the meeting was on implementing a solar power project to restore electricity to the town.

Commissioner Seme expressed his support for the power plant project, emphasizing the keen anticipation of Yei River County residents for the resumption of electricity services.

He highlighted the important role that reliable power would play in enabling local businesses to thrive and contribute to the town’s economic growth.

Community leaders in Yei County commended Commissioner Seme for providing a 250-square-meter plot of land near Hai Dam Stream, approximately three miles from Yei town, for the expansion of the solar power project.

The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Dams, Lam Tungwar Kueigwong, acknowledged the support of the Central Equatoria State Governor for this initiative.

He explained that the visit’s primary objective was to assess the condition of the existing hydroelectric power plant operated by YECO and identify the necessary renovations and technical upgrades.

The Undersecretary revealed that the World Bank has pledged to support the installation of a solar power system with a capacity of five megawatts, ensuring a sufficient and reliable electricity supply for Yei town.

The meeting was attended by the Hon. Minister for Housing for Central Equatoria State and the Central Equatoria State Minister for Roads and Bridges, as well as the Director for the Yei River County Department of Physical Infrastructure.
