Farmers in Yei River County are calling for increased support to bolster agricultural production amidst growing hunger.
The first planting season of the year has been particularly challenging for many due to a lack of essential agricultural inputs, including tractors, hoes, pesticides, and seeds.
One of the farmers only identified as Juba with over ten acres of land in Ronyi neighborhood, highlighted the numerous obstacles faced by local farmers.
“One of the challenges are, lack of Tractors for opening the lands, tools like hoes, seeds, panga, pesticides, training, transport and capital for boosting the agricultural sector,” he said.
The farmer urged the youth, both locals and returnees, as well as foreigners, to embrace agriculture as a means to overcome the current economic hardships.
Another farmer from the neighbouring Lainya County Kamba Apollo stated the many challenges they are facing.
He said they lack gumboots, axes, hoes, and even foke hoes, as well as other essential tools like watering cans.
Despite forming various farming groups, Apollo emphasized the need for more support to ensure food security in the greater Yei region.
“We have formed different groups of farming across the county of Lainya bordering Yei but there is a need for more support so that we are able to boast the food security in the whole of greater Yei,” he added.
