Bandits attacked and robbed an MTN, South Sudan vehicle along Yei-Lasu Road, in Central Equatoria state, while traveling to Libogo in Lasu Payam bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Yei River County commissioner, Aggrey Cyrus Kanyikwa, on Tuesday confirmed to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper on phone, saying the incident happened over last weekend.
According to the commissioner, the bandits walked away with some money and valuables, including phones.
“The SSPDF followed the robbers, but they didn’t find them” Commissioner Cyrus told this outlet, asserting that rebels were behind the act.
“These are rebels, some of them are trying to come out and others get it as an opportunity to be turning as criminal and this is what we have not expected, however at the end of the day, the guns that remained in the hands of the people will cause us problem,” Kanyikwa said.
He added that the attackers, four in number, took off fast after robbing the MTN vehicle.
The commissioner said that a similar case of robbery had happened along the road to Kaya Payam the previous month.
However, Kanyikwa stated that the security situation in Yei County is calm, saying there is no cause of alarm.
Efforts to reach MTN South Sudan headquarters in Juba for comment were not immediately successful by press.
