Police have rescued a 32-year-old man who cut off his genitals in an attempt to commit suicide.
The man, whom police identified as Gum Padual Machiek is a resident of Gabat Residential Area.
After cutting off his genitals, Mr. Gum also tried cutting his head off when he was rescued, last week.
The neck-injured victim is currently receiving treatment at Juba Teaching Hospital.
Deputy Police Spokesperson James Dak Karlo stated that criminal cases by isolated individuals are increasing due to a lack of law enforcement.
He mentions that poverty, trauma, forced marriages, divorce, and displacement are some of the factors attributed to the increase in suicide cases in the country.
“Suicide is a big crime here in South Sudan, mostly when you are caught alive, you are supposed to account for your actions,” Mr. Dak told this outlet.
But for the South Sudan’s context, Dak said people do not report the cases forgetting that there can be a remedy when such symptoms appear in an earlier stage.
According to the latest WHO data published in 2020 Suicide Deaths in South Sudan reached 425 or 0.51% of total deaths.
The age-adjusted Death Rate is 6.69 per 100,000 population ranks South Sudan 120 in the world.
In other crime-related incidents, a civilian named Thomas Modi Duku, 51 was shot and injured on his leg at Lokiliri residential area by unidentified armed criminals.
During the shooting, the attackers abducted Mr. Duku’s 7-year-old son, Jarfrino Thomas Modi, police said.
Another case was of an inmate ‘Kareng Sarafino Bringi 54 years who was found dead inside Juba Main Prison.
The Police said they are yet to establish the actual cause of the death of Mr. Bringi.
