The sound of heavy gunfire that shocked the city on Tuesday night between 10th and 11 o’clock left the population in the city feeling unsafe and seeking answers to what had happened. Citizens feel uncomfortable whenever they hear a gunshot in the country.
This time, it was an encounter between the security forces on duty and two night drivers who defied a security checkpoint resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
One near Dr. John Garang Mausoleum Customs area around the ministries road junction via parliament and the other in Kololo.
The army and general security agents represent the face of the nation and should behave in a manner that garners respect from the citizens. It is concerning to hear that on Tuesday night, there were gunshots, and the army failed to inform citizens in time, leading people to believe that there were armed gangs.
All soldiers deployed on the streets should conduct their checks peacefully to protect the people. Unruly behavior creates misunderstanding and fear in the hearts of the citizens who have chosen to stay in the country even when times are tough. Any government agent should not threaten civilians, whether at night or during the daytime. They should only perform their assigned duties. We eagerly await the peace agreement and the upcoming elections.
The sound of gunfire brings back memories of the senseless, greedy war that occurred between 2013 and 2016, resulting in massive loss of lives and properties. The counties and states in the country are still experiencing brutal killings, giving no hope for refugees to return home.
Leaders should instill hope in the people of this country so that the peace we are longing for becomes permanent, and our country becomes a place where we don’t have to flee due to greedy power struggles.
The citizens in exile should be able to return home to enjoy total peace in their own country, and the country should appear more responsible.
Today’s corruption has tainted everything in the country. Every politician only thinks about themselves and doesn’t notice the suffering of the poor citizens but only seeks to elevate themselves.
I call upon the government of South Sudan to arrest the criminals and put them on trial to face the law. We are at peace now, and with the elections ahead of us, South Sudanese need to prepare themselves for it. These killings must stop, and the country must move forward. Let’s avoid gun shootings to keep citizens at peace.
Be Right There!
God Bless South Sudan
