CES schedules marking World Peace Day in Yei

By Bosco Bush

Central Equatoria State (CES) government has announced plans to commemorate International Peace Day in Yei River County next month.

The decision was made during the Ordinary State Council of Ministers meeting held on Thursday, August 8.

The International Peace Day is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

During the meeting, the CES Council of Ministers passed some resolutions including the commemoration of the International Peace Day next month in Yei.

In a statement, Deputy Minister of Information, Gerard Francis said, commemoration of the World Peace Day is aimed at raising awareness on the value of peace, and further strengthen relationship with the citizens.

“The commemoration of the Peace Day is aimed at offering a platform for the State government to educate and raise awareness to the people on the value and culture of peace, promotion of non-violence approach in solving conflicts, and strengthening the relations between the citizens and the State government.”

Wrecked with the 2016 conflict, Yei is relatively recovering as a result of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement implementation.

The International Peace Day is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access.

This 2024 global theme is “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.”
