Citizens urged to embrace agriculture for development

By James Innocent

Otogo Payam, often referred to as the food basket of Yei, is renowned for its fertile land, particularly in the Cenema sub-boma, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Historically, this area attracted many traders before South Sudan’s independence, making food commodities readily available in local markets. However, the conflict presents challenges that need addressing.

During a visit to Otogo Payam, Ale Satimon, the county SPLM Secretary, urged citizens to prioritize agriculture over conflict.

“The people of Senema have to unite together to encourage the rest from the refugee camps in the neighboring countries to return home because they have suffered enough since 2016 conflict,” he said.

In his part, Otogo Payam Executive Chief Anyika Zakayo also called on the government to provide security so citizens can focus on agricultural pursuits.

He highlighted the community’s pressing challenges, including inadequate roads, health care, education, and youth empowerment.

This appeal came during Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme’s visit to Otogo Payam, part of a broader tour of five payams in Yei River County.

Despite the long distances and various challenges encountered—such as poor educational facilities, health issues, pothole-ridden roads, and communication barriers—Taban remained committed to addressing community concerns.

During his visit, Taban met with local leaders, including Chief Charles Anyika Zakayo and Director Towongo Santos.

He also engaged with youth and women, listening to their needs for vocational training and empowerment.
In response to the discussions, Taban pledged to collaborate with partners to deliver essential developmental services in Otogo Payam.

He announced plans for an Inter-Payam Peace Tournament to promote peaceful coexistence among the youth in Yei River County.

Additionally, Major General Ali Abdalahtif, the police commissioner, announced plans to increase police presence in Otogo Payam to address criminal issues and protect civilians and their property.

Youth representative Isaac Simon also called on the commissioner to support youth through vocational training and sports activities, emphasizing the need for peace and development in the payam.
