At least 62 orphans in Yei River County received scholarships provided by Coniah Medical Complex, a private medical facility.
Director Patrick Kenyi Daniel donated one million South Sudanese Pounds to the Kikiji National Orphanage Centre to fund the scholarships.
“I am putting the grants directly to the bank account of the orphanage Centre for easy accountability and follow-up of schoolchildren while attending classes because the future of the children lies in the hands of the elderly people” he said.
Coniah Medical Complex also offered free medical treatment to the scholarship recipients.
Dominic Living Wawa, founder of the Kikiji National Orphanage Centre, explained that the center has registered 118 orphans who have been deprived of education due to the 2013-2016 conflict. Many lost their parents and have struggled to access schooling.
He expressed gratitude for Coniah’s donation, noting that it enabled 62 children (26 girls and 36 boys) to attend primary and secondary school during the first term.
Wawa highlighted the challenges the orphanage faces due to the current economic climate, stating the importance of the grant to providing food and school supplies.
He appealed to the government, churches, organizations, and other well-wishers to support the orphanage, as many children lack basic necessities like food, clothing, and school fees.
Emmanuel Luke, one of the scholarship recipients, expressed his appreciation to Coniah Medical Complex for the support, which has enabled him to continue his education despite losing his parents.
