Authorities in Lakes State are investigating a distressing incident where a 12-year-old boy allegedly shot and wounded a 6-year-old girl in Abiriu Payam.

The incident, which took place in Pan-thilik village, has prompted the detention of a wildlife officer as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Spokesman Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said the 12-year-old boy gained access to a rifle belonging to a warrant officer from the wildlife department.

The officer had reportedly left the rifle unattended in a room. The boy, unfortunately, managed to obtain the firearm and inadvertently discharged it, resulting in the injury of the young girl.

The victim was swiftly transported to Abiriu Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) for immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, the young boy has been taken into custody at the Abiriu police station pending further investigation.

Maj. Mabor said the riffle’s owner is being detained for negligence.

This unfortunate event adds to the list of incidents reported in Cueibet County, underscoring the need for increased vigilance and responsible firearm handling.

He said the authorities are working to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter, and appropriate actions will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
